How to get from the airport to Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is on Sri Lanka’s south-west coast, about 115 km from Colombo. From Bandaranaike International Airport you can travel independently via Colombo or book a car directly to the coast. The right choice depends on your luggage, arrival time and budget.

If you are considering Mattala airport as well, check current flights and the complete road route before buying tickets. Our article about Mattala Airport explains why it is not always a simple alternative for a Hikkaduwa itinerary.

If you have not bought flights yet, read our article about flights and visas for Sri Lanka. Check the arrival airport, entry rules and airline conditions before payment.

The prices below were checked on 3 September 2026. Treat them as a current reference, not a promise: fares can change, and the final taxi price may depend on extra kilometres, stops, tolls and luggage.

Quick choice

  • Lowest budget: Airport Route 187 to Colombo Fort costs Rs 325 per passenger. The official railway fare from Colombo Fort to Hikkaduwa is Rs 200 in 3rd class, Rs 400 in 2nd class or Rs 800 in 1st class. The basic totals are therefore Rs 525, Rs 725 or Rs 1,125 per person, before the local ride to your accommodation.
  • Balanced option: take Route 187, then continue by train or coastal bus. The airport page says the air-conditioned bus runs 24 hours and takes about 50 minutes to Colombo Fort.
  • Most comfortable: use the airport taxi counter or a pre-booked transfer. The current airport taxi table lists Rs 22,788 for an air-conditioned car to Hikkaduwa. Confirm the final amount at the counter.

Airport to Colombo Fort

The airport is near Katunayake, while Colombo Fort is the main transport hub in the city. Fort railway station and the Pettah bus area are close enough to connect onward to Hikkaduwa.

The easiest public option is the official air-conditioned Route 187 Airport–Colombo Fort bus. It operates 24 hours, leaves from the outer porch of the departure terminal and takes about 50 minutes in normal conditions. The ticket is Rs 325 per passenger. The airport page lists an additional Rs 325 for baggage over 23 kg. Ask for Colombo Fort at the official stop and keep the ticket.

Traffic and waiting can add time. Do not accept a “bus representative” offer if the person cannot show the official fare or direct you to the airport stop.

Via Katunayake railway station

You can also reach Katunayake railway station and take a train towards Colombo Fort. This may suit experienced travellers, but it adds a local transfer and requires careful timing. Check the current Sri Lanka Railways timetable before leaving. The old schedule link from the previous version no longer works and has been removed.

Train from Colombo Fort to Hikkaduwa

Look for coastal-line trains towards Galle or Matara and confirm that the train stops at Hikkaduwa. The official fare sheet lists Rs 200 for 3rd class, Rs 400 for 2nd class and Rs 800 for 1st class from Colombo Fort to Hikkaduwa. Combined with Route 187, the reference cost is Rs 525, Rs 725 or Rs 1,125 per passenger. It does not include a tuk-tuk, bus or taxi from Hikkaduwa station to your accommodation.

Trains are inexpensive, but carriages can be crowded and large luggage is not always convenient. Buy tickets at the station and leave time for platforms and connections.

Bus from Colombo to Hikkaduwa

From Pettah and the central bus stations, look for services towards Galle, Matara or Tangalle. They follow the coastal road through Hikkaduwa. Ask where to get off near Narigama or your hotel. Bus prices depend on the service and route, so I do not repeat the old fixed fare from this article. Ask for the current price before boarding and carry small rupee notes.

Taxi or private transfer

The airport has an official taxi counter in the arrivals area. Its current table lists Rs 22,788 for an air-conditioned car to Hikkaduwa. This is much higher than the old figures of Rs 6,000–8,000 and Rs 7,500–10,000, so those old amounts should not be used for planning.

Before paying, confirm the destination, number of passengers, vehicle size, toll road, stops and waiting. The airport page mentions additional charges for extra kilometres and additional drop-offs. A pre-booked driver can meet you with a sign; our Colombo airport transfer listing is one option to request a fresh quote. Ask for the current total and cancellation terms.

If the driver offers the expressway, ask whether its toll is already included. It can save time, but no road guarantees an exact arrival time during traffic.

Return trip to the airport

A direct car is simplest for an early flight. Train and bus are cheaper, but require a connection and a generous buffer. Check the timetable the day before, allow time from Hikkaduwa station to your accommodation and remember that morning traffic can change the plan. Sharing a pre-arranged minivan with other travellers can reduce the cost, but agree on the total price, departure time and luggage space in advance.

Before you leave

  1. Confirm that your flight arrives at Bandaranaike International Airport.
  2. Check the current railway timetable before travelling.
  3. Budget Rs 325 for Route 187, plus Rs 325 if baggage exceeds 23 kg.
  4. Use Rs 200 / Rs 400 / Rs 800 as the Colombo Fort–Hikkaduwa rail reference for 3rd / 2nd / 1st class.
  5. Confirm the final taxi total and all extras at the official counter.
  6. Plan the final local ride from Hikkaduwa station to your hotel.
