Hikkaduwa is one of Sri Lanka’s best-known beach resorts for a reason. You can combine the ocean, surfing, snorkelling, diving, short trips along the southern coast and everyday resort life here. It suits different travellers in different ways: surfers and people who enjoy evening restaurants may prefer one area, while families and long-stay visitors may need another.
The town has a wide beach, hotels and guesthouses, cafés, shops, dive and surf schools. Galle is close, and the coast is easy to explore by short trips. Do not expect the same sea conditions on every beach or in every month: waves, currents, noise and crowds change with the season and from one stretch of coast to the next.
Getting there
Hikkaduwa is about 98 km south of Colombo and about 14 km from Galle. After arriving in Sri Lanka, many travellers go via Colombo Fort and continue to Hikkaduwa by train or coastal bus. The trip takes time, but the route gives you a first look at the busy coastal belt.

Galle is the nearest useful larger city for major shopping, banking and practical errands. It has more supermarkets, jewellery and souvenir shops than the resort strip, so you may not need to travel to busy Colombo for basic supplies.
Weather and the sea
November to March is generally a favourable period for calmer south-western coastal conditions. Sri Lanka Tourism describes Hikkaduwa’s main surfing season as roughly November to March. Rain does not follow a perfect calendar, however: a local shower may pass quickly and sea conditions can change from day to day.
The wetter months can still be enjoyable. You can visit Galle, walk around, choose protected parts of the coast and plan water activities around the weather. The official Hikkaduwa description notes that currents may be stronger south of the centre, so do not generalise from one calm bay to the whole resort.
Before swimming, observe the sea and ask lifeguards or beach staff about current conditions. Follow any lifesaving post instructions and do not swim beyond marked areas. Recent Coast Guard rescues in Hikkaduwa are a reminder that a familiar beach is not automatically safe in every swell or current.
Things to do
In season, Hikkaduwa is suitable for surfing, bodyboarding, snorkelling and diving. Sri Lanka Tourism mentions several surf spots, a shallow coral area with fish and turtles, small islets and shipwrecks for divers. Before paying for a school or operator, ask about the programme, group size, equipment, weather cancellation and what is included.
The reef is not a place to stand on or touch. Do not break coral, chase turtles or feed marine animals. Choose operators that keep a respectful distance. If the water is cloudy or the swell is strong, postpone snorkelling; a photograph is not worth risking yourself or the reef.
You can also visit Galle, walk through the surrounding villages, see a Buddhist temple, book a boat trip or go fishing. Ask clear questions before booking a gem-mine visit or an animal attraction: confirm the programme, price and duration, and avoid places that encourage visitors to handle or feed wildlife.
Restaurants, cafés, bars and beach venues are active in the evening. High season brings more choice but also more noise and people. If you sleep early, check the distance from music, the main road and beach events before booking.
Food and shopping
Hikkaduwa offers Sri Lankan food, seafood and familiar European dishes. Menus may include rice and curry, fish, prawns, crab and coconut sauces. If you do not eat very spicy food, ask for a milder version and check sauces. For seafood, choose places with good turnover and clear food storage.
A morning visit to the fish market can be interesting, but buy fresh fish only if you have a kitchen, ice and a way to cook it the same day. Shops, markets and supermarkets cover everyday groceries. Compare quality and price, wash fruit and avoid buying more perishable food than you can use.
Fruit
Papaya, bananas, pineapple, mango, coconut, jackfruit, watermelon and dragon fruit are common. In season you may find rambutan, mangosteen, lychee and passion fruit. Taste and price depend on season, seller and ripeness, so buy a small amount first.
Bananas and mangoes come in different varieties and sizes. Jackfruit and other strongly scented fruit are best packed separately if you stay in a small room or travel by public transport.
Nature and the reef
There are palms, tropical plants and many birds around Hikkaduwa. In residential areas you may see squirrels, monkeys, monitor lizards and other animals. Watch from a distance, do not feed them and do not try to pose closely with wildlife.
In the water, keep the same simple rules: do not touch coral or turtles, leave no plastic, use suitable equipment and follow permitted routes. Visibility and reef life can vary between locations.
Accommodation
Hikkaduwa has luxury hotels, guesthouses, apartments, hostels and long-stay rentals. Check more than the beach distance: noise, ventilation, backup power, internet, kitchen, water, entrance security and cancellation terms all matter.
First-line accommodation may be noisy because of restaurants, nightlife and traffic, and the ocean can be loud at night. The second or third line is often more comfortable. Read recent reviews, check the map and confirm what is included in the price.
For a short holiday, beach and restaurant access may matter most. For a long stay, prioritise reliable internet, a workspace, kitchen, washing machine and quick access to shops. Families should check stairs, hot water, shade, beach conditions and the distance to a pharmacy.

It is a good base for travellers who want beach time, activities, cafés and easy access to Galle. Surfers and divers can find schools and rentals, while first-time visitors can choose lessons and guided trips. Families should choose a specific beach area and season rather than relying on the resort name alone.
Before booking, ask three questions: do you need calm water or waves, can you accept evening noise, and will you travel around the island? Your answers determine the best area, season and accommodation. Hikkaduwa then becomes a practical base for your route rather than an abstract “perfect resort for everyone”.
