Hikkaduwa is a small resort on Sri Lanka’s south coast, about 20 km north-west of Galle. Travelers come here for more than the beach: the same area combines the ocean, surfing, coral-reef snorkeling, diving, boat trips, cafés, and easy excursions to Galle. Hikkaduwa is not one large beach with identical conditions everywhere. The sea changes by beach section, season, tide, and weather, so check the water on the actual day of swimming or a marine activity.
The resort can work for both active holidays and longer stays if you choose the area carefully. Beachfront accommodation usually means more cafés, music, traffic, and evening noise; the second or third line is often quieter. Families should check air conditioning, window screens, hot water, safe beach access, and whether any rooms or outdoor areas are shared.
Where Hikkaduwa is and how to get there
Sri Lanka’s official tourism website places Hikkaduwa about 98 km from Colombo and 20 km from Galle. It lies on the Colombo–Galle route, close to the coastal railway and the main road along the south-western shore. This makes it a convenient stop between the airport or Colombo and Galle, Unawatuna, and the southern coast.
From Colombo, you can take a train to Hikkaduwa station or a southbound bus. The train is popular for the ocean views and the station’s position near the resort, but speed and comfort vary by service and crowding. A bus can be easier with bulky luggage, while a car or transfer works better when you want to stop at several places. Do not promise an exact three-hour journey: traffic, stops, roadworks, and departure time all matter.
Before leaving, check the official Sri Lanka Railways schedule, the departure station, and whether seat reservations are available. For a transfer, agree on the exact address and drop-off point in advance: the resort is spread out, and accommodation may be far from the station or from the beach section you want.
Weather and seasonality
For Sri Lanka’s south-west and southern coast, the drier and generally calmer marine period is usually November to March. The official tourism description of Hikkaduwa also identifies roughly November to March as the best surfing period. In other months, warm rain does not make a trip impossible, but the open ocean can be rougher and snorkeling or boat plans may need to change.
A season is only a guide, not a weather guarantee. Wind, short showers, and heavy surf can occur even in the drier months. Before swimming, look at the waves, current, water color, and local advice. Do not enter the ocean at night or near rocks, boats, and channel mouths; do not assume a lagoon or sheltered section is safe in every condition.
Beaches, coral, and snorkeling
Hikkaduwa’s main feature is the shallow coral area near the shore, often described as the Coral Sanctuary or Hikkaduwa Coral National Park. Reef fish and sea turtles can be seen here, and glass-bottom boats are available for visitors who prefer to stay on the surface. A reef is not a swimming pool or a tourist prop. Do not stand on coral, break it, touch animals, or feed turtles for a photograph. Use mask and fins only where current conditions and the operator allow them. Ask whether a visit fee is included, what boat is being used, and whether life jackets are available.
South of the central reef area there is a more open sandy shoreline with waves for surfing and bodyboarding. The official tourism description warns that currents can be stronger south of the reef. A place suitable for an experienced surfer may not suit a child or someone who only wants to swim. For a first lesson, choose a school with an instructor, check the board, and stay inside the area indicated by the professional.
What to do in Hikkaduwa
Surfing and diving
Hikkaduwa has surf schools and dive centers where you can rent a board or book a dive. Conditions depend on season, waves, visibility, and experience. Before paying, ask where the group will go, how many people will be included, whether equipment and insurance are included, and what happens if the weather is unsuitable. Divers should never chase animals or touch the reef.
Boat trips
A boat trip can show the reef from the surface, but water clarity and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Choose an operator with a clear route, working life jackets, and respect for protected-area rules. If the sea is visibly rough, postpone the trip instead of taking unnecessary risks for a photograph.
Galle and nearby places
Galle is close enough for a half-day or full-day trip. You can combine a walk through the historic part of the city with shopping and lunch without moving inland to Colombo. Around Hikkaduwa, you can also visit small temples, coastal villages, souvenir shops, and other beaches. Leave extra time for longer routes: traffic on the south coast can change the plan quickly.
Food, fruit, and everyday shopping
The resort area has cafés, restaurants, and small places serving rice and curry, seafood, vegetarian dishes, and European food. Choose fish and seafood where storage is clear and products turn over quickly. At a market, look at the ice, work surfaces, and how long food has been sitting in the heat.
Shops, markets, and supermarkets usually offer bananas, papaya, pineapple, mango, coconut, and seasonal rambutan. Selection and prices depend on the month and location. Wash fruit with safe water, and have coconuts opened in front of you. If you plan to cook, check in advance where basic groceries are available.
Nature and respectful wildlife watching
Hikkaduwa has palms and tropical vegetation, and visitors may see birds, squirrels, monitor lizards, monkeys, and other animals. That does not make it appropriate to approach or feed them. Do not leave food or rubbish on the beach, and do not take coral or shells from a protected area. Not seeing snakes or other wildlife does not mean it is sensible to walk barefoot through vegetation at night.
Where to stay
Hikkaduwa offers hotels, apartments, guesthouses, and hostels at different levels. Look beyond distance to the ocean and check road and venue noise, generator or internet backup, water pressure, ventilation, air conditioning, window screens, kitchen access, and house rules.
Beachfront accommodation is convenient but can be noisy late into the evening. The second and third lines are often quieter, but check the lighting and route after dark. With children, do not rely on “near the beach”: identify a section where swimming is suitable on your dates and ask the host about nearby shops and pharmacies.
A two- or three-day plan
- Day one: check in, walk along the shore, see the nearest beach, and observe the sea before planning activities.
- Day two: snorkel, take a lesson, or join a boat trip if the ocean and weather allow it; have dinner in the resort area.
- Day three: visit Galle or take a slower local day with enough time for the return journey.
Before every activity, check the forecast, tide, waves, protected-area rules, and the operator’s cancellation terms. Do not schedule several marine activities without a buffer: wind or rain can change the program.

Hikkaduwa suits travelers who want beach infrastructure, cafés, surfing, snorkeling, and convenient connections to Galle and Colombo. It is less suitable for someone seeking a completely silent, empty shore or guaranteed calm water every day. For that kind of trip, dates, beach section, and accommodation require careful checking.
The simple rule is not to accept the word “perfect” without checking. Look at the actual sea, read the accommodation description, choose responsible operators, respect the reef, and leave time for weather and transport.
