Eastern Province

description

The Eastern Province of Sri Lanka is one of the nine provinces of the country and is located in the northeastern part of the island. It is bordered by the Northern Province to the north, the Bay of Bengal to the east, the Southern Province to the south, and the Uva Province to the west.

The population of the Eastern Province is predominantly Tamil-speaking, with Tamils and Muslims making up the majority. The province is also home to a significant Sinhalese population.

The capital city of the Eastern Province is Trincomalee, which is known for its natural harbor, beaches, and historical sites. Other major cities in the province include Batticaloa, Ampara, and Kalmunai.

The Eastern Province is known for its rich history and culture, with many ancient temples, forts, and other historical sites to visit. It is also home to many beautiful beaches, wildlife parks, and nature reserves, making it a popular destination for ecotourism and adventure activities.

The province is also known for its agriculture, particularly rice cultivation, and is a major producer of spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, and pepper.

However, the Eastern Province has also experienced significant conflict and displacement due to ethnic tensions and the Sri Lankan Civil War, which ended in 2009. The effects of the war can still be seen in the region, with many displaced persons still struggling to rebuild their lives.
