Kitulgala & the Kelani River Valley

Kitulgala is a small town in Kegalle District on the Kelani River, surrounded by wet-zone rainforest. Nearby Makandawa Conservation Forest has about 8–10 km of trails and rich birdlife. Belilena Cave is a separate visit about 8 km from town. The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed nearby; only concrete bridge footings remain.

The river is a base for white-water rafting, but conditions change with rainfall. Check the forecast and river conditions with the operator; confirm it is listed by Sri Lanka Tourism and check helmets, fastened buoyancy aids and a safety briefing before boarding.

There is no single ticket for Kitulgala town or the river valley. A 2025 field report estimated Makandawa Forest entry at about LKR 900 for a foreign visitor; this is not a confirmed 2026 tariff, so ask at the visitor centre. As one published example, Rapid Adventures lists its multi-activity day-out package at USD 70 for one foreign guest, USD 45 per person for two, or USD 40 each for groups of 3+; it includes rafting, jungle trekking, canyoning, lunch and tea—not rafting alone. Confirm current inclusions and rates with the operator.
