Galle Fort and Old Town

Galle Fort is a living historic town on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, not a closed museum. Founded by the Portuguese in the 16th century and developed under Dutch rule in the 18th, its street plan and buildings bring European design together with South Asian traditions. The Old Town and its fortifications have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1988.

Walk the ramparts above the Indian Ocean, see the lighthouse and bastions, and explore the streets, churches, galleries, cafés and museums within the walls. The town remains inhabited, with homes and businesses alongside historic buildings; respect residents and any site-specific access or photography rules.

The CCF visitor listing gives Galle Fort visiting hours as 07:00–17:00 and describes a single-entry ticket with online booking. CCF’s current price table, updated 24 September 2026, lists Galle Museum separately at USD 6 (LKR 2,004 at the listed exchange rate) for a full ticket and USD 3 (LKR 1,002) for a half ticket.
