Jaffna Fort and Nallur Cultural Quarter

Explore two nearby but distinct Jaffna landmarks: the lagoon-side fort and Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, an active Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Murugan and a centre of Tamil Saivite worship and culture. The temple’s official site traces its history to 948 AD.

The official worship schedule lists regular hours of 04:00–05:15, 07:00–12:00 and 15:00–18:20; Fridays 04:00–12:00 and 15:00–18:20. Festival times may differ. No admission price for Nallur is stated on the temple site; confirm current arrangements there.

At Nallur, remove footwear. Photography and filming are prohibited on the temple premises. Keep quiet during worship and dress respectfully: men must remove shirts/tops in the inner sanctum or designated worship areas; women must cover their shoulders and avoid sleeveless tops. Large bags are prohibited; phones should be off or silent.
