Besides Colombo airport, Sri Lanka has another international gateway: Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI, airport code VCRI). It is in the south of the island and can be a useful arrival point when your route begins near Hambantota, Tangalle or the southern national parks. Do not choose it only because of old claims about cheap tickets: routes, airlines, schedules and fares change. Compare current options and check the flight on the official airport board or with the carrier before buying.
When there was little practical information about the Hambantota airport, we travelled there and checked it ourselves. I have kept the impressions from that trip below, but separate them from current information. An empty terminal, a rare flight or a service that worked on the day of our visit should not be treated as a permanent rule.
Where is Mattala airport?
Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport is near Hambantota in the southern part of Sri Lanka. The current aeronautical publication identifies it as VCRI and places it approximately 9 nautical miles from Hambantota town. This is more precise than the old rounded description of “30 kilometres from Hambantota”. For travellers, the practical point is that the airport is not near Colombo or the popular west-coast resorts, so calculate the distance to your next stop by the actual road route.
The surroundings are open and lightly populated. On our earlier trip we saw wild-elephant warnings, animal tracks, peacocks, buffaloes and egrets; airport staff confirmed that the animal we saw in the distance was a leopard. This is a personal observation, not a promise that you will see wildlife today. Do not stop on the road for a photograph, approach elephants or treat the area as a safari park. Follow airport and local safety instructions.
Who should consider arriving at Mattala?
Mattala is worth considering if you are heading towards the southern or south-eastern part of the island and find a suitable flight to this airport. It may be more convenient for an itinerary through Hambantota, Tangalle, Yala or onward to Arugam Bay than flying to Colombo first and travelling back south. “More convenient” does not mean “close to every attraction”: calculate the time to each hotel, beach or park separately.
The airport can also suit travellers who are willing to arrange a transfer in advance and do not expect to step out of the terminal into a major transport hub. If the fare is noticeably lower, compare the saving with the transfer, baggage, travel time and a possible overnight stay. A cheap ticket is not necessarily a good deal if you then need an expensive last-minute car or have to change the whole route.
Getting to and from the airport
The old version of this article said that there was no taxi or transfer service at the airport. That can no longer be treated as current: the airport’s official passenger-services page lists taxi counters in the terminal and an airport taxi service supervised by Airport and Aviation Services. It also says that public transport is available during peak periods. This does not mean that a particular car or bus will be waiting at every hour of the day.
For a calmer arrival, save your hotel address, the host’s phone number and a backup route before departure. If you arrive late, travel with children or bulky luggage, or plan to go a long way immediately, arrange a transfer before the flight and ask for the price, waiting time, vehicle type and possible road charges to be confirmed. Do not build your plan around the old claim that one bus ran to Hambantota every two hours: current public transport depends on the time and operating conditions.
Hambantota may offer further bus connections, but confirm them locally. For Tangalle, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa or Colombo, compare a direct transfer, a bus combination and a car with driver in advance. Road distance can differ substantially from straight-line distance, while rain, season and roadworks affect travel time.
What is inside the terminal?
Your impression of the airport depends on the number of flights that day. During our visit the building felt almost empty and very quiet. The current official passenger-services page lists an information desk, restaurants in public and transit areas, a paid lounge with showers, two banks with currency exchange, ATMs, SIM-card sales, left-luggage and bonded-baggage services. It also lists taxi counters, parking, duty-free shops, a medical centre, first aid, accessibility facilities and childcare rooms.
A service listed online is not a guarantee that every shop or restaurant will be open during your wait. Do not depend on the airport for a large food shop or for exchanging all your money. Carry basic water and a snack, check your bank card and keep some Sri Lankan rupees in reserve. If you need a shower, lounge, SIM card, baggage service or special assistance, confirm the details with the airport before travelling.
There is a business-class lounge, but it may not be included in every ticket or available without restrictions. Check its conditions and price on the day of travel. For an international flight, arrive with enough time for check-in and controls: a small passenger flow does not remove the required procedures.
Flights and schedule checks
Mattala is open for charter and scheduled operations, but the list of destinations should not be copied from an old article into a current itinerary. The original text mentioned SriLankan Airlines, flydubai and specific cheap tickets from Kyiv. Those details belong to an earlier period and have been removed as current recommendations. Check the route in your ticket, on the airline’s website and on the airport’s official flight board.
Check the departure city, airport, operating days, arrival time, baggage rules, connections and refund conditions. A search engine may show an old, seasonal or unavailable fare, and the name Hambantota can hide different route options. Save your flight number and check its status again shortly before leaving for the airport.
Advantages and limitations
The main advantage is its location for southern and south-eastern routes and the possibility of finding a suitable direct or charter flight. The terminal offers basic services, while the official taxi counter makes onward travel clearer than it was in the past. The open landscape can be an unusual part of the journey if you understand that this is a working airport in a lightly populated area.
The limitations are important: there are usually fewer flights than at Colombo, transport and accommodation outside the terminal need advance checking, and distances to the western and central parts of the island can be long. Do not plan on the assumption that the aircraft will be almost empty, staff will greet every passenger like a VIP or every café will be open. On one of our trips my father travelled alone on part of the route and received a very warm welcome from the airport staff. It is a good personal episode, not a service standard that can be promised to everyone.
The old expectation that the development of the port would automatically bring many new flights and infrastructure is not a practical guarantee either. Assess the airport using the confirmed services and schedule for your dates, not forecasts from a decade ago.
How to plan the arrival
- Choose your first overnight stop and onward route before comparing Mattala with Colombo.
- Check the flight with the airline and on the official board; do not rely only on an old article or search results.
- Before buying, calculate the transfer, baggage, food, possible overnight stay and time to the next stop.
- Pre-book a car for a late arrival or a long journey and save the confirmation.
- Check which terminal services will be available at your time: taxi, public transport, currency exchange, SIM, shops and food.
- On the day, recheck the flight status, keep the hotel address offline and do not plan a connection down to the minute.
Conclusion
Mattala Rajapaksa is not a universal replacement for Colombo airport. It is a second international gateway with a different geographical purpose. It can shorten the journey to some southern destinations, but it requires more careful planning of transport and schedules. Choose it when the current flight, fare and route all make sense. Do not choose it solely because of an old 100-dollar saving, an empty-road promise or a bus timetable published many years ago.
