Sinharaja Forest Reserve

Sinharaja is Sri Lanka’s lowland rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage site with exceptional biodiversity and many endemic species. The reserve spans Ratnapura, Galle and Matara districts. Choose an entrance before travelling: Kudawa is the main northern approach, with southern entrances around Deniyaya and Pitadeniya. These are separate access points; do not assume a route crosses the entire reserve.

Visits are on foot; local sources advise arranging a guide in advance. Before departure, check permits, access and current rules with the Forest Department or at the entrance. Wear closed shoes, bring water and rain/leech protection, stay on marked trails and follow conservation guidance.

Price note (checked September 2026): no single current official tariff could be confirmed. Recent independent guides estimate foreign-adult entry at about LKR 1,500; other 2026 sources quote around LKR 3,800 or US$25. Guide hire is separate; one source estimates LKR 2,000–4,000 per half-day. These are estimates, not guaranteed official rates. Confirm the entrance fee and guide cost with the Forest Department before travelling and carry cash.
