Polonnaruwa District lies in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province and extends well beyond the town and archaeological site that share its name. This page covers a varied area: a medieval capital, present-day settlements, reservoirs, farming communities and wildlife destinations.
The ancient city of Polonnaruwa is one of the district’s best-known places, but it is not the whole district. The Central Cultural Fund describes its royal precinct, Gal Vihara and religious monuments as a World Heritage site. The modern town is a separate place to stay, shop or arrange daily needs; a district-wide search may lead much farther into the countryside.
Water shapes both the landscape and local livelihoods. Parakrama Samudra and other reservoirs belong to a long irrigation history, while paddy fields remain part of the North Central plains. Sri Lanka’s Department of Census and Statistics reported that Polonnaruwa had the country’s largest paddy-cultivated area in the 2024 Yala season: 66,614 hectares. Minneriya and Kaudulla offer a different setting: open water, dry-zone scenery and protected wildlife areas. They are not the same as the archaeological park or town centre. When arranging accommodation, transport or a local guide, check the exact starting point and distance to the park you plan to visit rather than relying on “Polonnaruwa” alone.
For a longer stay, compare the actual settlement. Housing near town may suit people who need shops and services close by; a rural address may fit other plans, including work connected with farming, but daily travel will be different. Ask where a property or service is located and consider how it connects to the places you need to reach regularly.
The same detail matters when looking for work, transport, repairs, equipment or household help. A specific town or village may be more useful than the district name, while visitors planning several stops may start with a wider area and narrow it down. Check the location attached to each offer before making arrangements.
