What to bring to Sri Lanka as a gift for locals

An article for those who do not like to visit empty-handed. If you want to please the locals with gifts, but don't know what to take, here are some ideas.

It is better to take something that is not in Sri Lanka, or for example, it is very expensive there, or something interesting

For children, you can grab sweets, different by weight, cool pens, felt-tip pens. Sri has it all, but this is his own, and this is overseas. Much cooler)

For adults: dark chocolate, coffee, sausage, alcohol, cigarettes, seeds, halvah, souvenirs, T-shirts with national symbols.

From the strange - knitted children's hats. I don’t know why, but we often see children in warm hats)))

Products not available in Sri Lanka

  • buckwheat (we have never even heard of this here)
  • cottage cheese, sour cream (in general, there is a limited choice of dairy products and they are expensive)
  • sausage (there are only frozen sausages and sausages)
  • mayonnaise (what is sold here as mayonnaise is not at all the same product, even in composition. rather, it is a kind of sweet sauce)
  • seeds
  • halvah (available, but made of sesame and, accordingly, expensive)
  • some types of meat (duck, goose, turkey, lamb. There are essentially only three types of meat - chicken, pork (from a black pig) and beef)
  • meat products (boiled pork, bacon, smoked meats - none of these)
  • berries (the only berries are strawberries)
  • Marshmallow
  • rye bread, pita bread (there are only two types of bread in Lanka - white brick and bread for toast))

Expensive and rare products

  • oatmeal
  • oil
  • coffee (only local)
  • cheese (very small range)
  • dark chocolate
