Internet in Sri Lanka

Notes about internet in accommodation listed on our website.

A Wi-Fi router can be used in every listed accommodation unless stated otherwise. A small amount of traffic may be provided at check-in at the owner’s discretion; we do not guarantee its volume or speed. For full connectivity, choose and pay for a suitable package from the operator connected at the property, or use mobile internet.

Packages and technology have changed a great deal since 2018. Sri Lanka has 4G mobile service and operators offer 5G in selected areas, but coverage and speed still depend on the exact beach, house, floor, weather and network load. Do not schedule important work merely because a listing says “Wi-Fi”. Dialog and SLT-Mobitel offer tourist and standard prepaid options; homes may use a 4G router, fixed broadband or fibre. An “unlimited” plan can still have a speed cap or fair-use rules, so read the plan conditions before paying.

If stable internet matters, do not rely on hotel or guesthouse Wi-Fi without testing it. Keep a local SIM or eSIM as a backup even where the host promises good Wi-Fi. Dialog and SLT-Mobitel have arrival-hall counters and official shops across the island; a passport is required for registration. Check validity, daytime and nighttime data, top-up options and eSIM compatibility with your device.

Tip!
Turn off automatic updates and mobile backups on phones, tablets and laptops. They can use surprisingly large amounts of data when you are not used to metered internet.

Operators and plans

February 2018 prices are not useful for planning. The following examples were checked on the operators’ official pages on 2 September 2026; confirm them once more when you buy.

Dialog. Tourist plans list 20 GB for LKR 1,399, 30 GB for LKR 1,799, or 50 GB plus unlimited WhatsApp for LKR 2,450, tax included. Its mobile-broadband plans include 12 GB for 30 days at LKR 915, 40 GB at LKR 1,995 and 100 GB at LKR 2,795. A mobile plan and a home plan may require different SIMs, devices and conditions.

SLT-Mobitel. Tourist packs list 15 GB for seven days at LKR 821, 30 GB for 30 days at LKR 1,540, 90 GB at 3 GB per day with unlimited WhatsApp and Google Maps/Waze at LKR 2,999, or unlimited data at LKR 5,131. The unlimited offer is subject to FUP. SLT-Mobitel also offers eSIM; a passport is required for a prepaid connection.

Hutch and Airtel. They also operate on the island, but do not choose a network for long-term remote work on price alone. Test signal at the exact accommodation, ask the host which operator is used and whether there is a backup. The same 4G icon can deliver very different results in neighbouring bays.

How to test internet before a long rental

Ask the host for the operator name, a router photo and a speed test from the room where you will work. After arrival, test in the morning, afternoon and evening: make a video call, upload a work file, check latency and ask whether the connection has a daytime cap. Find out what happens during a power cut and whether there is backup power. If two people work online, one phone test is not enough.

Hotspotting is useful on the road but drains battery and data with cloud sync, video calls and updates. Set data limits, download maps and materials in advance, and keep a second channel for critical work: another operator’s SIM/eSIM, a power bank, offline files and a known café or coworking place nearby. Do not use open networks for banking without additional protection, and never give confirmation codes to anyone.
