Where to Post an Ad in Sri Lanka: Sell an Item, Offer a Service or Find Customers

Life in Sri Lanka often creates a need to offer something to other people. Before leaving, someone may want to sell equipment, furniture or a surfboard. After moving, there may be things no longer in use. A craftsperson, photographer, teacher, driver or another specialist may be looking for customers. A property owner may need a tenant, while a small business may want to reach people in a particular town or area.

Such offers are often posted only in Facebook groups, Telegram chats or WhatsApp communities. They can bring a quick response, but the post soon disappears in the feed, becomes difficult to find and forces people to read many messages just to understand whether the item is still available.

On Ceylon by Anilau, ordinary commercial and private offers use the Offer listing type. It is suitable when you are offering something to others: a product, service, rental, job, equipment, transport or another item that can be bought, ordered, rented or received under agreed terms.

The purpose is simple: not just to say “I have this”, but to give someone enough information to decide quickly whether the offer fits and whether it is worth contacting the author.

When you need the Offer listing type

The easiest question is: are you offering something to other people, or looking for something yourself?

If you are offering something, the usual choice is Offer.

It can be:

  • selling a new or used item;
  • renting accommodation, transport or equipment;
  • professional or household services;
  • lessons, consultations or private training;
  • a job or cooperation proposal;
  • selling business equipment;
  • transfers, repairs, delivery or another local service.

If you sell a laptop in Colombo, rent a scooter in Weligama, offer photography in the south or work as a translator, these are all offers.

Some tasks have their own formats. A permanent page for a restaurant, café, salon or other physical place belongs in Places and Venues. A concert, workshop or festival with a date belongs in Events. A search for bloggers and advertising partners belongs in Promo.

Offer is for a product, service, rental or another concrete proposition for a potential customer or buyer.

Where people usually post ads in Sri Lanka

Each channel has its strengths.

Facebook groups work well for local communities and quick responses in a particular area. Telegram and WhatsApp chats can be useful inside expat and language communities. Instagram helps specialists and small businesses show a portfolio and build trust.

But a social post and a complete listing solve different problems.

A chat post is mainly for people who see it now. A listing remains available in a catalogue, can be opened through a direct link and can structure the description, price, photos, location and contact details properly.

A practical approach is to use more than one channel: create the complete listing first, then share its link in relevant groups and communities.

What you can sell through listings

Private listings are convenient for items that are difficult to send through international marketplaces or are easier to hand over in person.

In Sri Lanka this may include furniture, household items, phones and laptops, appliances, bicycles, surfboards, sports equipment, tools, children’s items, travel gear and much more.

Expats and seasonal residents often buy things for a few months and sell them again before leaving. Used goods can therefore have a natural local market.

A buyer mainly needs four answers: what is being sold, what condition it is in, where it is located and how much it costs. Missing even one of these often creates unnecessary messages.

How to write a listing for an item

A good title is specific.

Instead of Great laptop for sale cheap, write MacBook Air M2 13″, 16/256 GB — Weligama. Instead of Scooter for urgent sale, write Honda Dio 110, 2023 — Matara.

The reader should not have to open the card just to discover which product is available.

Describe condition, age, contents, known defects, reason for sale, handover area and payment terms. For electronics, add the model and key specifications. For furniture, give dimensions. For sports equipment, mention size, brand and wear.

If the item is used, show signs of use honestly. Hiding a scratch in a photo usually only wastes time at the meeting.

The price should be clear

“Price in direct messages” makes a sale harder without an obvious benefit.

Most buyers compare several options. If one listing includes price, condition and location while another requires every detail to be requested, people usually start with the first.

State a fixed price plainly. If negotiation is possible, say so. If the cost depends on the service volume, rental period or configuration, explain the calculation.

In Sri Lanka, always identify the currency. The same number in LKR, USD and EUR represents very different amounts.

Do not set a symbolic price just to make the card look cheaper in the catalogue. It attracts the wrong people and creates distrust.

Photos sell better than long promises

For physical items, photos can matter more than half the text.

Professional photography is not required, but the image should be sharp, bright and honest. Show the whole item, then important details and its condition. For electronics, show the device switched on. For transport, show different sides, the dashboard and visible damage. For furniture, show it in a room so the scale is clear.

Do not use only a shop photo when selling a used item. The buyer needs to see the exact item they will receive.

If documents, card numbers, passport details or other personal information appear in a photo, crop them before publishing.

Location matters especially in Sri Lanka

Two points may look close on a map, but the journey can take much longer than a buyer expects.

“South Sri Lanka” is too broad for most private listings. Name a town or area such as Mirissa, Weligama, Ahangama, Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa, Colombo, Negombo or Kandy.

If delivery is possible or you can bring the item to a nearby town, say so.

For a large item, location may matter more than a small price difference. Someone is more likely to buy a table near home than arrange freight across half the island.

How to offer services

A service needs a different presentation from a used item.

Someone looking for a photographer, teacher, craftsperson, designer, translator, driver or repair specialist needs to know not only the price but why they should choose you.

Start with a concrete result. Instead of High-quality photography services, write Photo sessions for couples, families and small brands in southern Sri Lanka.

Explain which areas you cover, which languages you speak, what is included, how long the service takes and how the price is formed.

If you have a portfolio, website, Instagram or examples of work, add a link. Real examples are usually more convincing than a long promise of quality.

When the service price depends on the task

Not every service can be honestly priced with one fixed number.

Repairs, design, trip planning, legal consultations and private transfers may cost different amounts depending on scope.

Instead of an empty “price negotiable”, give a reference point:

Transfers along the south coast — from 8,000 LKR; the final price depends on the route.

Or: Photo sessions from 25,000 LKR per hour; larger shoots are calculated separately.

This lets a potential client understand the order of cost and avoid an enquiry if the budget is completely different.

One listing should contain one clear offer

Sometimes an author tries to put everything into one card:

I repair phones, sell laptops, can set up advertising, organise excursions and rent out a room.

Such a listing is difficult to find in a catalogue and even harder to understand.

If the areas are genuinely different, separate them. Someone looking for phone repair should land on a phone-repair listing.

The exception is a group of related services that people naturally buy together. A photographer may offer shooting, editing and short videos; a technician may offer diagnosis and repair for one equipment type.

For rentals, state the period and conditions

Rental listings often omit the most important information.

For accommodation, transport, equipment or sports gear, state the minimum period, price per day or month, deposit, available dates and what is included.

“Scooter for rent, good price” forces the reader to start a conversation immediately.

Honda Dio for rent in Weligama — 35,000 LKR per month, 20,000 LKR deposit, available from 1 November.

Even if terms are negotiable, basic numbers reduce irrelevant enquiries and save time for both sides.

The language of the listing affects reach

Sri Lanka is an international market. One offer may interest local residents, expats and visitors from different countries.

If you are ready to work with an international audience, complete versions in suitable languages are useful. Do not paste Russian, English and German one after another into the same description.

Prices, specifications, location and conditions must match across versions. If an item is sold or the price changes, update every current language version.

Language is especially important for services. If you teach only in Russian, that is a material condition. If you work comfortably in English and German, it may expand the customer base.

Do not forget trust

On listing platforms, buyer and seller often do not know each other. The more expensive the offer, the more transparency and verifiable information matter.

Do not hide significant defects. Do not promise certificates, licences or qualifications you do not have. Do not use someone else’s portfolio to advertise your services.

A website, professional page, reviews or public profile can provide additional confirmation.

For a high-value deal, do not rush because the other side says “someone else will take it now”. A normal sale can withstand a few clarifying questions.

Safety in private deals

For an ordinary low-cost item, sensible everyday precautions are enough.

Meet in a clear public place if you do not want to invite a stranger home. Check payment yourself rather than trusting a transfer screenshot. Do not share passports, bank details, verification codes or account access.

If a buyer proposes a strange “courier” scheme, asks you to pay an unknown fee first or sends a link to an unfamiliar payment page, stop and verify everything.

For cars, property, large deposits and other legally significant deals, an advert alone is not enough. Check the documents and terms separately.

Should you also publish in groups?

Yes, especially when something needs to sell quickly.

Instead of reprinting a long text each time, use the listing as the main page and post a short announcement in the group:

Work chair for sale in Weligama, 18,000 LKR. Good condition, height adjustable. Photos and details via the link.

The listing stores the complete information while groups provide extra fast reach.

If the offer changes, update the main listing first. Otherwise different groups will soon contain different prices and terms.

Do not remove a current listing too early or leave a sold offer active

If an item is reserved but the buyer has not collected it, mention that in the description. If the deal falls through, the offer remains available.

After the final sale, however, the listing should not collect messages for weeks.

The same applies to services, rentals and limited-time offers. If you no longer accept orders or the property is occupied, update the status or remove the listing from publication.

An up-to-date catalogue helps everyone: buyers avoid old offers and sellers receive more targeted enquiries.

How to use Offer on Ceylon by Anilau

If you sell an item, offer a service, rent something out or publish another proposition for a potential customer, choose the Offer listing type.

The important part is not advertising style but complete information.

Write exactly what is offered in the title. Choose the correct category and location. Add the price if known. Upload real photos. Describe characteristics and conditions that affect the decision. Leave a contact where you are genuinely ready to reply.

If the offer belongs to another specialised task, use the relevant format:

  • Places and Venues — a permanent page for a physical business or interesting place;
  • Events — a specific event with a date;
  • Promo — finding bloggers, influencers and advertising partners;
  • Demand — when you are looking for a product, service or another offer yourself.

The last option is useful when the catalogue does not yet contain a suitable offer. That scenario deserves a separate article.

Checklist for a good Offer listing

Before publishing, check that:

  • the title makes the offer clear immediately;
  • the correct category is selected;
  • a real location is specified;
  • price and currency are clear;
  • photos show the actual item or service;
  • condition or service scope is described;
  • important defects are not hidden;
  • rental or order terms are clear;
  • a working contact method is provided;
  • language versions contain the same facts;
  • the listing will be updated after a sale or change of terms.

The less basic information a person has to request in messages, the better the quality of responses.

A good listing shortens the path from search to deal

Private listings work not because they use special advertising formulas. They work when two people meet: one needs something the other genuinely offers.

The seller’s task is to make that match as simple as possible.

The Offer type on Ceylon by Anilau provides a permanent card in the local Sri Lanka catalogue. It does not replace Facebook, Telegram, Instagram or other channels; it complements them. The offer can be found by category and location, opened through a direct link, reviewed with photos and conditions, and followed by contact with the author.

If you want to sell an unwanted item, find customers for a service or offer a rental, start not with a loud slogan but with a specific and honest listing that makes it immediately clear what you offer, where it is, how much it costs and how to contact you.
